Straight out of the London College of Fashion Rachel knew from her very first millinery class with Marie O Reagan that her love of all things ‘Hats’ was off to a great start.
Rachel served her apprenticeship with the late Frederick ‘Freddy’ Fox, milliner to the Queen. It was here that Rachel was able to show her ability to broaden her already in-depth knowledge and passion for the industry. Combining the traditional methods of Freddy’s couture creations and Rachel’s vision, she was able to finish her apprenticeship and join Stephen Jones in the late 80s and early 90s, where she worked on exciting experimental materials and shapes for catwalk shows for Lanvin couture, Balenciaga and Claude Montana.
In 1993 Rachel established her own label, ‘Rachel Skinner Millinery,’ working out of a studio at first and progressing on to opening a shop in Primrose Hill. The next decade saw Rachel’s label travel the world; exhibiting at London and Paris Fashion Weeks and producing wholesale collections for stores such as Harrods, Harvey Nichols, and Selfridges in London and Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman and Takashimaya in New York and Japan.
Rachel took some time off to raise a family but her passion for hats could not be held back for too long and in 2013 Rachel came together with her long-standing friend Sarah Lomax, whom she had first met over 2o years before when Sarah was also serving her apprenticeship with Freddy Fox. With a deep knowledge and understanding of their craft, Rachel and Sarah set up the label Lomax and Skinner and they do more than just make exquisite hats.
Thoughtful designs, beautiful materials and meticulous attention to detail inspire and inform their working practice. With an ethos rooted in outstanding quality and timeless appeal, the profound respect they have for the history of their trade is woven through every piece they make. Rachel and Sarah work out of a studio in Lewes, East Sussex making bespoke orders for hat wearing events and recently caught the eye of the West End Theatre where they made many of the hats for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Show Cinderella.
